As a high school student, you will probably take the SAT and/or ACT in preparation for college applications. These test scores are used by colleges when considering students' qualifications for entrance and/or scholarships. Aside from colleges, many academic organizations also look at those test scores when determining eligibility, especially if there is scholarship money at stake.
The PSAT is another standardized test that is commonly used for determining National Merit Scholar qualifications. Many students also use it as a practice for the SAT.
You can greatly increase your chances for good scores in high school by practicing any or all of these tests in advance. Here are some opportunities:
Websites: College board.org (the SAT homesite) is a comprehensive site for test prep. The ACT also has information about preparing on their site.
Books: there are many prep books for these tests. The ACT and SAT organizations publish their own, and companies such as Kaplan's provide books that you can use to prepare.
Duke TIP: Through this program, 7th graders can take the SAT. Scores on the SAT can be used for further opportunities through the Duke TIP program. Let me know if you are interested.
